  • Oil painting of Two Jays on a cherry tree after William Webbe

Oil painting on canvas interpreting Two Jays on a Cherry Tree by William James Webbe.

William James Webbe (1830 - 1904) painted the original circa 1860. Webbe was born in Redruth, Cornwall and later lived on the Isle of Wight in the early 1850s, where he was a close friend of Tennyson. Webbe subsequently moved to London and established a reputation for his finely-worked rustic genre scenes, allegorical and fairy paintings, as well as subjects of highly detailed flora and fauna, such as this composition of Two Jays on a Cherry Tree. The painting depicts a pair of jays perched on branches of a cherry tree and tussling over a ripe cherry - a similar theme to his 1857 Royal Academy exhibit A Thief of a Magpie.
