Alexandre Calame (1810-11864) was a Swiss landscape painter associated with the Düsseldorf School. Forced to work in a bank from the age of 15, he lost his father and had to provide for his mother. Art was a hobby for his spare time until meeting his patron, the banker Diodati, who made it possible for him to study landscapes full time.  The Alps became his speciality, truly understanding the glaciers as the pinnacle to emerald-green trees, white foaming mountain water and whipped clouds against the multi-colored rocks.
