The original painting, fully titled Rome, a View of the River Tiber at the Porto della Legna Looking towards Castel Sant’Angelo,with Saint Peter’s Basilica in the distance, was painted circa 1690 and was sold by Sothebys, England in 2012 with an estimate of £1.2-£1.8 million.

Gaspar van Wittel (1653 - 1736) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman who had a long career in Rome and his work is considered an important precedent to urban veduta-painting. As a surveyor he illustrated a project for the navigation of the river Tiber; this series of drawings would be a valuable record in the direction of his career. In his compositions, a clear interest in aspects of daily life in the city can be observed.
