The painting depicts Salerno, circa 1870 - a city on the Amalfi Coast of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula, in the Campania region. Its sheer cliffs and rugged shoreline dotted with small beaches and pastel-colored fishing villages is as popular today as it was during the Grand Tour. Alessandro La Volpe (1820 - 1887) was an Italian painter who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and became a prominent exponent of the second generation of the Posillipo school. He painted, with great attention to detail, wide landscapes of Italy's attractive scenery. He was elected honorary professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples in 1870.
