Oswald Achenbach (1827 - 1905) was a German painter associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting and considered among the most important landscape painters of Europe and had great success alongside his brother, Andreas Achenbach, as two of the most important German landscape painters of the 19th century. Oswald toured Europe paitning dramatic landscapes including this view of the Bay of Naples with active fisherman at the shore, with a smouldering Mount Vesuvius in the distance.
